Emergency Medicine Physician Assistant

North Bay Regional Health Centre is seeking a full-time Physician Assistant to support its Department of Emergency Medicine

North Bay Regional Health Centre is a 480 bed health care organization with acute care services including a 24/7 emergency department, 16 bed Critical Care Unit, inpatient adult and pediatric medicine, internal medicine and IM subspecialties (GI, respirology, endocrinology, nephrology, non-invasive cardiology), obstetrics and gynecology, pathology, psychiatry and surgical subspecialties to North Bay and the surrounding catchment areas of Mattawa, West Nipissing and Temiskaming.

Position Description:

Reporting to the Manager of Medical Affairs and the Chief & Medical Director of Emergency Medicine, the Physician Assistant will work collaboratively with emergency medicine physicians in the assessment and treatment of a diverse patient population in the emergency department.

This role functions in accordance with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario’s policy on delegation and under approved hospital medical directives.

The Emergency Medicine Physician Assistant will follow a rotational schedule that includes weekdays, evenings and weekends. No overnight shifts or on-call coverage will be required.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assess, manage and disposition patients, under supervising physician, with a focus on:
    • Lower acuity patients who require fewer investigations
    • Patients that require a procedure before discharge e. casting, suturing, etc.
    • Assisting physicians with comprehensive discharge instructions e. concussions, cast care, etc.
    • Liaising with mental health allied care providers as it relates to patient care and documentation
    • Assessing patients at triage during high flow times to disposition or order appropriate tests above nursing medical directives with a goal to expedite care and disposition
    • Focus on patients waiting to be seen the longest to improve P4R metrics
  • Support ED Physicians with the delivery of patient care in hospital EMR ED module by means of:
    • Performing admissions and order entry under supervising physician as needed
    • Supporting discharge planning process and liaise with nurses, GEM, home care, crisis workers/HANDS, and ED allied health care providers to do so
    • Consult with other services and physicians as needed to arrange specialist opinion, follow-up or admission
  • Participate in ED quality and workflow improvements

Qualifications:

  • Graduate of an accredited Physician Assistant education program offered in Canada or the United States
  • Certification through the Physician Assistant Certification Council of Canada or US National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA)
  • Registration in good standing with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario (CPSO)
  • Member in good standing with the Canadian Association of Physician Assistants
  • Current BCLS Certification (recent as of one year) required
  • Recent past experience as a Physician Assistant in an inpatient medicine setting or relevant clinical placement experience in an in-patient medicine setting

Skills / Abilities:

  • Excellent verbal and written communication required
  • Ability to function independently and as an active member of a multidisciplinary team in caring for all patients
  • Involved in continuing education on an ongoing basis and demonstrate commitment to quality improvement required
  • Must demonstrate commitment to ensure personal safety, safety of fellow workers, patients, volunteers, and visitors
  • Ability to support and contribute to a culture of safety and prevention of adverse health events required
  • Must demonstrate good attendance and work record
  • Bilingualism (French / English) is an asset
