General Psychiatrist

Position Description:

The Service of General Psychiatry manages a 30 bed Acute Inpatient Psychiatry Unit (AIPU) that provides high-intensity, acute psychiatric services for individuals who are 18 years of age and older experiencing acute psychiatric symptoms and/or at risk of harm to self or others. The core of the program is psychiatric consultation and assessment, supported by nursing, psychology, social work, concurrent disorders, occupational therapy, and recreational therapy services.

AIPU treats a range of individuals in acute distress or psychiatric crisis with the aim of controlling symptoms and restoring patients’ ability to function. Key means of treatment include pharmacological treatment, skill and knowledge building, and supportive, patient-focused discharge planning.

Psychiatrists with this service also provide outpatient services via various outpatient clinics.

The organization is an affiliated academic teaching centre with the NOSM University. The preferred candidate will be expected to participate in teaching undergraduates and postgraduate medical learners.

The successful candidate will be expected to participate in the Department of Psychiatry hospital on-call rota along with consult liaison services to the medical units of the organization.

Qualifications

Applicants require certification in Psychiatry by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and must be independently licensed to practice Psychiatry in Ontario by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario (CPSO).

NBRHC also welcomes interest from residents in their final year of specialty training.

Remuneration

This position will be remunerated with a competitive monthly clinical stipend with opportunities for additional OHIP billing income, Northern Specialist APP, Hospital On-Call Compensation (HOCC) stipends and teaching stipends.

The hospital has a competitive physician recruitment incentive package which includes a

$25,000 recruitment stipend, $25,000 practice start-up grant, assistance with relocation expenses and up to $94,000 through the Northern Rural Recruitment & Retention Initiative (NRRRI).
